Text: Mark 9:49-50
For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
This short passage appears only in Mark which in his gospel follows on the heals of the teaching on Offenses. Salt is a preservative and fire is a purifier. The idioms full meaning may not be known but the basic idea is that everyone will be preserved through being purified. There is a repetition of sorts here as well from the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount but the final command is actually new and sums up this whole block of teaching – ‘be at peace with one another’.
This passage also ends the time of Jesus’ Fourth Galilee Ministry and he once more turns his attention to Jerusalem for a couple of feasts. We are more than a half a year away from the passion week at this time and you are going to start to see Jesus becoming more focused on it.
