It had been a pretty busy week for the pub. The Christmas Party for my employees had gone well although there was the occasional empty chair. Actually, I should clarify that it was couples of chairs at a time as this couple or that would disappear periodically for fifteen minutes or a half hour. You get the idea of what was going on I would hope if you have been to a few Christmas parties. That said the next day I was up the next morning and was throwing myself into preparations for the New Year’s Eve Ball.
I expect people to be classy at this thing. This is a full formal but what formal means to a lot of the pub patrons differs from person to person. I had little to do in the way of decoration as Naphtha’s magic swept away the Christmas stuff for a silver and white winter wonderland of decorations that was classy and elegant. All I had to really do was get ready myself once all the food and drink was arranged which took a couple days. That involved two things. 1) I had to find a tuxedo with tails and a top hat. I chose a black tux with gold everything else. Shave, haircut and manicure. I added my father’s pocket watch to my black and gold ensemble. 2) I had to make sure I had the ring in my pocket before the last dance. To avoid the possibility of losing it I put it in as soon as the first music of the evening hit the air. There it rested next to my father’s watch and I felt like he was smiling over me.
It was a great night as each couple arrived. Everyone was dressed formally with a few exceptions. The most notable of which was Mr. and Mrs. Champagne who arrived in body paint that depicted them in a tux and formal dress but the truth was they were naked as always. Pint even wore a golden collar for the occasion. He didn’t even growl at me when I put it on. Hilda had wore a nice dress that accented her curves nicely and plus size though she was she looked very good and was getting a few winks. The other ladies looked lovely as well in full formal gowns and the men on their arm’s hansom. We looked good. Everyone was there and that is when Tequila made her entrance.
She like me was dressed in black and gold. Her dress was made of a black velvet and it was strapless and low cut but in a classy way. On her wrist she wore a gold chain bracelet that matched the fine gold chain around her neck. Her high heal shoes were gold as well and she had a gold comb that held back her hair from her face that made her hair outline her face perfectly. He makeup was perfect and she was the vision of loveliness I had come to love deeply. I walked over and bowed to her and she curtsied back. I then handed my hat and walking cane to the doorman. Then, I extended my hand to her and after she took it we walked arm and arm to the center of the dance floor.
In this world I am not that important or powerful in my estimation. I own a pub and command a segment of a group that is dedicated to keeping the evils of the world away from the innocent. Today though all that made me feel like a king and I was dancing with my lovely queen. This was a night of wonder and love. It was the power of romance and splendor I would not trade for anything. We had been through a lot and accomplished much this last year. We had survived a war and death. We were still here and this Ball was a simple statement of that and that we were alive and not going to let life get us down. We endured and thrived and we were happy about it.
Tequila and I danced several times but I also made my rounds till every woman had a dance with me. Tequila did the same. I was dancing with Mrs. Champagne when the countdown to midnight began. It should be noted that when dancing with a naked woman one needs to be very careful where you put both you hands and feet. I broke away from her and I quickly found Tequila who I bowed to once again and she after bowing to me took my hands and we began the last dance of 2014.
The countdown eventually interrupted us, She and I were gazing into each other’s eyes when it was announced that midnight was thirty seconds way. I held her in my arms and heard “10-9-8-7-6-5-4…” It was at this point I kissed Tequila deeply and we heard “Happy New Year!” in our ears but kept kissing for a good ten seconds after all that even died down. When we finally broke apart, I looked her in the eyes once more.
It was time and I reached into my pocket and fell to one knee. I opened the small box that contained the ring I had bought for her about two weeks ago. Her hands went to her face.
‘Tequila, I love you. I want to spend my life with you forever. Will you marry me?”
Tequila at first seemed speechless for a second or so. Several people had stopped well wishing and fell silent around us as they realized what was going on. Tequila nodded and said “Yes…Oh, yes!”
A cheer went up from the crowd and I found myself putting the ring on her finger. I sparkled mightily in the bright light of the ball. I kissed her once again. I heard Pint barking happily and then felt the hands of loved friends shaking my hands and arms hugging my neck for some time. The band started a party tune and everyone went back to dancing to celebrate the New Year.
It was many hours later that I found myself alone with my fiancée. Only pint was left in the pub and he was sleeping off many beers. I was sitting on my stool behind the bar. My bowtie was loose and Tequila was on my lap. She was looking at her ring and smiling. It was going to be good year no matter what as long as she was by my side. She kissed me once more and the world faded.
Happy New Year!!! Thanks for being a part of the pub in 2014.
