I like the Factual Feminist because not only does she get to the truth she also points form a woman’s perspective why it is important to be presenting real numbers and real facts. I have a research degree and often I have found that people stretch the facts or try overblow them to get people to rally to their cause. There are of course problems with this from a male perspective.
1. Men are lead to believe they are not good as a sex. I mean in order to promote these myths you really have to take pot shots at the male of the species and make all males into the bad guys. This can be a self fulfilling prophecy or just anger men so they are not supportive. The point is that there are probably only small percentage of men that are lousy human beings (the same percentage probably exists in females) and so it is quite unfair to throw out false facts that seem to point to men just being evil.
2. You lose male support for you cause. Men are by nature factual people and when they discover a fact is a lie, they balk at supporting the person who used the false fact. There are a lot of men who hear the issues women present and who are on the fence about support but when they figure out that the facts are false they get quite angry about it. Most men do want to help you but they also have this notion that they should be actually solving a real problem supported by real facts not made up ones.
3. You lose female support. Like it or not when mythology is invoked by feminism and women figure out it is mythology, they begin to drop support as well. The one thing that is certain is that people realize that eventually the truth will come out and when it does there will be a backlash. This is why you see so many women saying they are no longer feminist and don’t need feminism. They are really for equality and not gaining some edge over men to dominate them. When you use false facts you are playing a game of dominance and not trying to genuinely help.
4. False facts cause a misappropriation of resources. As the video points out, one of the greatest dangers is that false information can get you to put resources in the wrong place or develop something that is far larger than it needs to be to combat a problem. The sexual slavery issue is a good example. We have seen millions of dollars spent to mobilize the country’s police forces to be looking for these large sex trade dealers that must exist with 100,000 to 300,000 girls in that trade. The problem is we are looking for 200-300 girls and that would have been better served with an FBI task force specially tasked to root it out. It would have been far more effective and less expensive.
My point is this you will never win an argument with falsity. You will not ultimately do good with lies. You gain support short term but then because of the lie you will have not just an eroding of support for your cause but also a backlash both from your supporters and those the false facts accused of being evil or wrong. It is better to simply tell the truth and actually deal with the problem that actually exists.
