As I struggle through the remainder of Winter (Egad we’re near the end of January already), my fitness thoughts turn to Spring and my new rotation plan of using the season to guide my training. In Michigan we do have four seasons although Winter has a tendency to be a little longer than the others it seems as far as weather. This Winter has been fairly mild but last year it went on for five months. In any case for the purpose of training I try to use the seasons to my training advantage. In that spirit, let’s do the rundown but demonstrate how the season change things.
Strength: I used to cut diet during Spring but I now prefer to use the Summer heat to help me out there. So Spring becomes more of a building muscle phase. More 3×10-12 sets. Summer shifts me to 3×15, Fall is about strength so things go to more of 5×5 and then Winter is more 4×8-10. Idea is to keep my muscles challenged with different sets and reps as the year unfolds.
Nutrition: Spring is just going to be bout getting me on a nice muscle growth diet with probably a very Paleo Diet feel to it but I am not afraid to go off diet once or twice a week. Summer – I will cut diet with minimal carbs if any. Fall – When I strength train I don’t give a rip about diet as much but I probably should. Winter – With all the holidays and crap like that I basically lift to build muscle so that plays into that idea.
Cardio: Spring is usually a time of fairly regular Cardio Training with about 30 min a day. Summer it doubles to two times per day. Fall – It drops to about three times a week and back to 30 min. Winter – Back to 30min every day.
Flexibility – To be honest, I guess the idea is to learn yoga and then figure out based on how my body responds so perhaps different forms and ways of doing it might fit into the above a little better. I know so little that I really can’t make and informed decision on that one.
If I have made any decision that is bout my training is that this issue is no longer competing in a contest or anything like that. My goal is to create something where I am constantly improving and challenging myself to be better. It is about health now and that is far more important than any trophy.
Blessings and Cheers!!!
