I was brooding as I often do when faced with a puzzle that seems unsolvable. The war room was shadowy and dark other than the light from various monitors. The map in front of me was lit up like a Christmas tree. The zombie attack we had thwarted was now in my opinion a diversion. The other cemetery in the pub side of town had something similar and we were kept busy for some time. When the zombies were finally dealt with we had several new problems including reports that the vampires were moving into three safe houses and there was reports of other activity outside the city in the factory district.
I had to shut down the vampire safe houses and my teams did a pretty good job at it but the activity in the factory district had to be let go and when we finally got time we ran into a whole army of zombies around a particular factory and there was just no way my teams could take them all out especially since they seemed to be close to their source of life. You would kill them and they would rise again. Best we could do is keep them contained to that part of town. We had been played. While we had been putting put a whole bunch of fires the beachhead for the enemy had been created far up river in the factory district on our side of the river.
I head a footstep behind me. I didn’t move.
“Hi Shrike, I thought you were supposed to be infiltrating the bad guys for me.”
“I have, I just have sensitive information, your eyes only.”
“Your eyes only just gets me aroused, could you be more specific.”
The woman known as Shrike laughed. I had only met her once with Colonel Gin but she was a memorable woman. I turned around.
Before me was a woman who looked only vaguely like the woman I remembered. She had lost her lovely Irish red hair in favor of a midnight black pulled into a pony tail behind her head. She was dressed in a red and black ensemble that I had seen many of the vampire women wear. It was provocative showing a lot of leg and cleavage. On her belt was twisted dagger of sorts.
“I liked you better before.”
“Needed to look like them to infiltrate them. I use my magic to conceal my status as a living breathing mortal instead of one of the undead. Only trick is to not actually let one of them get too close.”
“Pity, I have found that getting close to someone is the best way to get information.”
“Yes I know,” she smiled wickedly.
“So what was so vital you had to tell me yourself.”
“New players. Mr. Lies wanted to keep you in the dark about them until his plans were complete but I though I would tell you now. Mr. Lies has brought in Death and Grave to help him with you.”
“Now what did I ever do to deserve such VIP treatment?”
“You should know, Mr. Lies loses very rarely these days. You made him look really bad recently. He still is growling about it.”
“So Death and Grave. What does that mean?”
“Mostly, it means a whole lot more zombies, ghouls, liches, wraths and similar nasties but it also means you have two minds dedicated to death and corruption against you. Have Colonel Gin call up the dossiers.”
“Yeah, I don’t know how long I can maintain this particular cover. Might have to shift to something else to get closer to Mr. Lies. Just wanted to let you know if you encounter me on the other side for some reason to not look surprised and blow my cover. No matter what I do, look and act like, remember that I am on your side. I may appear as a new enemy but I remain your friend, remember that.”
“I understand ruthless pragmatism, Shrike my dear. I just don’t always like using it.”
“Good, on both counts”, and then with a puff of smoke she was gone.
Nice trick I thought. The only problem is others might see her and not knowing who she was might get the wrong idea. Only Colonel Gin and I knew who she really was. This could get messy.
