The DVD disk I got from my last encounter with Mr. Lies minions was a bombshell to say the least. On it was a recording of something I never thought I would see. It was a recording of my first wife but with a twist. She was holding up a newspaper and it clearly was a headline from a mere week ago. She still had that pale but sensual look to her and she was wearing something that in her days with me she would have been far too shy and modest to wear, that is she was wearing nothing at all. There was that birthmark on her left breast that I would only recognize. I had the intelligence boys run it through all their test to make sure it wasn’t some tampered or created product of technology gone amok. They came back with the report that it was authentic and that suddenly got my wheels turning and my anger boiling at the same time.
When my first wife had been infected with vampirism, we had her in a holding cell and kept her there until I decided what to do. Vampirism has no cure and the only way to free a person’s soul from it is to kill them. I was not going to do the dirty deed myself but gave it to my people to do quietly and then dispose of what was left (ash) in some place where I could then move on. The problem was if this recording was authentic she was still alive in vampire form and that was going to require some explaining from my crew. I know it wasn’t Tequila as I had specifically gave instructions that it not be, but the person who had the assignment of killing my wife had flubbed. I didn’t know who it was but they owed me an explanation as to why, the how I already knew because it was on the tape.
Someone had simply let her out. I mean there she was sitting cross-legged naked on the floor of the cell and then the door opened and a hand motions her to follow and then she goes up and pulls a nightgown over her head and walks out. The perspective was from the door that opened and I had to realize that there was a traitor now as well as a spy in our midst. The only clue was the hand and I had it analyzed every which a way and it confirmed the hand was female. That didn’t help me much but everyone told me my first wife was dead so there was more to this than just a sneaky escape. There was a willing cover up by a lot of people.
So there I was in the conference room in the sub basement looking at my entire crew and asking for an explanation and everyone was being evasive in their won way from looking at their feet to staring blankly. Tequila was truly at a loss and she told me that she didn’t know what was going on and I believe her as she is my second wife. She had also been with me from the time I gave the order till it was done.
Colonel Gin spoke first, “Sorry Boss, we had orders to follow.”
“Yeah you did, mine!”
“Sorry you were outranked on this one. Overseer Bradshaw made the call.”
“Who the hell is Overseer Bradshaw?”
I looked at Tequila and she had the face of pure disgust.
“Boss, he is the head of special ops for the Silver Shields. He is one of us…sort of.”
For the next half hour I was told who Overseer Bradshaw was. He was a man whose main purpose was to play with the edge of both supernatural power and ethics. He was the shadow ops director and well as a guy who could engage in speculative research. He wanted my wife for a very specific bit of research so she was handed over to him. In a very secret transport she was flown out of the city and to his special research facility. She was to undergo an experiment and then either be terminated or released depending on the results. The problem was Mr. Lies got wind of it and intercepted the transport and took her. He apparently had kept her under wraps until now. His purpose was unknown for revealing her now other than to throw me off-balance. Mr. Bradshaw had been informed and was on his way here.
“So when were ay of you going to tell me this?”
Colonel Gin spoke, “Well, most people here didn’t know. Tequila was certainly kept out of it as with most of the rest of them. Only myself, Rum and Margareta knew being the command staff. Honestly though boos we were under orders to say nothing. I would have gladly broke this rule but dog gone it, you and Tequila were so happy and you had already grieved your wife so we let it be. I really wasn’t sure what to do.”
For Gin to say that meant he was really befuddled. God bless him but I would have probably done the same thing.
“So when does the Bradshaw arrive?”
“Couple days to a week. He wasn’t specific.”
I nodded. This was going to get ugly. I felt Tequila close the distance behind me and put her arm around me.
“Where ever this leads, I am with you. I am your wife you know.”
“Yeah, but now I have two wives. I have become a polygamist through ignorance. What am I going to do?”
Tequila just held me in silence. Gin dismissed the meeting. When they we all gone it was just the two of us with her holding me. Nothing had changed really other than my wife who was vampire was still out there. She needed to be put down like a sick dog but there was no way to do that. Mr. Lies had a pretty powerful weapon and I knew it. I started to sob and pretty soon all I felt was Tequila’s arms around me and sorrow.
