I don’t often get asked to bless things but when I do it gets a little interesting. I particular when a friend of mine said he wanted to put together a Blessing of the Guns, my response was “Oh-Kay?”. I thought about it a little and realized that there should be something that blesses weapons but I didn’t realize how far I would have to go back to do so. The military does a lot of this stuff for soldiers. For civilians who are gun owners there is little on the internet or elsewhere and I couldn’t find anyone in the USA that does gun blessings. This Sunday we ended that with The First Annual Blessing of the Guns at Fowler’s Home on the Range. I had the honor of giving the blessing which I had to create almost from scratch as I could only find a blessing for a knight’s sword from the middle ages. So as follows here is the blessing for guns and for shooters:
Heavenly Father we ask you to bless these guns for your service. That your right hand may be upon our own hands as we use them. That they first and foremost may be used only for defense and enjoyment. That when they are used for defense, that they will be used to protect the innocent and the defenseless against the forces of evil that would take our lives, our homes and our liberties. That when they are used for enjoyment that they would be used safely and purposefully.
We also ask a blessing on these shooters. That they would always understand the magnitude of the responsibility of being a gun owner and a citizen of this country who is a gun owner. That they would always strive to be loyal to their God, their families and their country. That they would be humble and thus respect the power that rests in their hands. That they would be courteous to all, even their enemies. That through their responsible and humble use of these weapons they would give glory to the name of you, Our Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit and be a testimony of faith and grace to those around them. In Your Name we ask it. Amen.
