Inspiration is one of those nebulous things to some people and that is mostly because they are not looking at it right. Anything, and I mean anything, can inspire a thought or idea so it is best to carry around a notebook if you’re a writer. This is a habit I started many years go and I always have a notepad with my and a pen. I write down ideas, plan even doodle in it. Sometimes the doodles turn into ideas.
That said I think I should say something about being unique in your inspiration. Don’t get the idea that you will ever come up with something truly new. Solomon wasn’t kidding when he said there is nothing new under the sun. What makes a story unique is that your telling it and it is your uniqueness that makes the story unique.
As an example I am currently writing three separate serials on this blog. Each of them is not particularly unique. The Theology Pub draws its inspiration of urban fantasy stories from Harry Dresden and many others, allegory has been around for a long time linking theology and philosophy to symbolism to get across concepts for ages. The Adventures of Ayn Jones is based on MegaTraveller the pen, paper and dice RPG but with its own unique universe rather than the Shattered Imperium. I also have, of course, borrowed from science fiction in general but the story is uniquely mine because I am telling it. The Banner of Rosenhall is largely based on a computer game named Mount & Blade but I have added some fantasy elements that are low powered or truly unique much like Howard did in the Conan series. Once again nothing unique except it is me telling the story.
Inspiration is not about being uniquely different. It’s about you taking your style and making it tell a story the way you will tell it and if you are good story-teller people will read it. People like the same stories and the same story plots are repeatedly used because those plot appeal to us on a human level. Inspiration is the ability to take these stories and tell them in way that reflects who you are. This is where the science of writing meets the art of it. You are that art.
The Soul Rundown:
Reading: Buried in homework reading right now and still have some writing to do this weekend. I have a plan to make my writing load a little lighter before the weekend is over so if I can get done what I need to there will be more time to read between classes.
Writing: Had massive writing for school weekend and this weekend if I pull that off again a lot of writing for one class will be finished.
Family: Sometimes you have to make choices and last weekend I chose school over family a lot but was necessary because if I didn’t do it that way I would be hurting as far as school is concerned.
Finances: Well yeah, going to school and making plans as to what to do when my BS in Political Science ;). So far only two options really appeal to me and that is pursing more political science or well law and becoming an attorney of some sort. Either way, the money will be better than now and I might actually be able to talk about retirement in twenty years.
Blessings and Cheers!!!
