For those of you who haven’t figured it out yet – I am nerd. A six-foot, five inches tall, 300lbs. weightlifting nerd but nerd nonetheless. A friend of mine introduced me to a game called Traveler a long time ago when I think I was twelve or so. It was quite simply one of the most brilliant science fiction RPGs ever created. I later in life picked up its more sophisticated cousin MegaTraveller in the late 80s and quite frankly it was so addicting to me that I got rid of it at same point. Recently I have begun to recollect some of the stuff of it because it is actually quite a system to use as a backdrop if you are writing a science fiction star spanning adventure. It was this game that inspired my most recent series of fictional adventures: The Adventures of Ayn Jones.
The thing about this game system is it actually quite adaptable and you can quickly create characters, adventures, worlds and even large sectors of space. Its random generators were simple so if I need new star system, roll a few dice and wham there is a star system. I have generated entire fleshed out characters in less than fifteen minutes. For writing this means If I land Ayn on a new planet I can know quite a few background details as soon as she touches down just from rolling the dice. If she meets someone new, I can roll up the persons background and stats in a few minutes and continue writing. This I hope will add to some of the randomness of the series and make it a little less predictable.
That said, I am not going to completely guano loco with this as if something just is too weird or odd, I will modify it. One of the things I did along these lines is decided to create a whole new universe in a whole new galaxy. This is to avoid predictability as well but also to kind of make the story my own a little more. No doubt role-playing in the Shattered Imperium of MegaTraveller was a lot of fun but it is not the kind of interstellar political situation that I want for my story. Instead I have opted for a two by two sectors square of space dominated by five different political entities plus some independent worlds. I am going to use some of the alien races from MegaTraveller and some of those political entities will be dominated by them.
Some of things that are the same are the space craft, the tech levels and other things like this to get some continuity. The space professions are the same only modified by the government that the person worked for. Instead of the Imperial Navy, you have the Republic Space Navy and so on. As a spoiler, Ayn is going to join the scouts for her republic. This in my mind is the best situation to put her in to give her experiences I want and as she develops will give her the most opportunities for adventure. Also the scout service best suits the loner type of individual and she is headed down that road. She is going to have to be very self-reliant to survive and that will lead to some interesting situations and adventures as well.
The Soul Rundown:
Reading – Been reading for school a lot but more than that writing for school a lot. If I am looking at my schedule right this will not change until near Thanksgiving. That said not much reading of Atlas Shrugged is going on but hopefully this will change soon.
Writing – I have some massive writing projects for school coming up but the blog still rolls on. It is often my only escape from the mountain of homework I have, so I look forward to it.
Finances – Education in process, still looking for something quick to make money on the side but so far no dice.
Family – I think I have already told you my daughter is expecting our second grandchild. The news can now be shared that it will be another girl due in March. Second granddaughter means I will need more money. This does become a vicious cycle doesn’t it. More cute little girls to spoil, what could go wrong with that?
Blessings and Cheers!!!
