I smiled. Things could not be going better if I had planned them that way. For the last week the reports had been that vampires were gathering at Mr. Lies mansion. They were arriving and the security had increased but not as much as to concern me that we couldn’t handle it. I had every agent of the Silver Shields with me and I had brought out the Patton tank too. We were hidden and in position all we needed now was the signal from Shrike that the vampires were feeling the effects of the cure.
I took a look at the front gate with my binoculars. It was strong but I figure one high explosive shell from the Patton would make short work of it. I then looked to count the guards for twentieth time. Not as many as you would think but the fact was this party Mr. Lies was holding was a whose who of the vampire world. If my plan worked this would be a blow to the vampire world for years to come. The time ticked.
At just an hour before midnight Colonel Gin came up to me and said that Shrike had reported that the vampires were about to engage in a toast with the Blood Wine. Her next report would be that the cure was working. Precious second ticked off and then it came. Shrike reported that many of the vampires were in convulsions. I ordered the attack.
The gun of the Patton roared and the main gate exploded and then every agent surged forward from their hiding place. I simply watched the battle but I did ready my shield and walk behind the main line. The vampires in front of me simple ceased to be. I say Jade’s Axe go through one. Margareta’s guns blazed. Oni Kim’s swords flashed. It didn’t take long to get in the gate, clear the courtyard and then I walked right up to the front doors.
The my team breached the doors. As we entered there were signs of the Blood Moon Wine’s affects every where. Spilled wine, former vampires losing their blood lust and basically being incapacitated. My team went through the mansion and gathered up the cured ones. We quickly discovered there was a problem with the cure. New vampires were cured but it seemed some of the longer term vampires were somewhat resistant. It took more of the cure to affect them and so we found some mid-level vampires that were cured but others had dropped their glasses when they realized something was wrong. We cleared the whole place in a very short time. The only thing left was the throne room.
We pushed the doors open but the throne room was empty. Save for a few vampires that were now cured laying on the floor. One of them was my first wife. She looked up at me with eyes completely different from before. Her hatred and contempt were replaced with something different that I couldn’t place. I didn’t have time to deal with her though at the moment. I wanted to find Mr. Lies.
It was quickly discovered that Mr. Lies had escaped. I cursed my bad luck and went back to the center of the throne room. My wife wasn’t the only one cured – Sister Papoofnick had been cured as well. She however was not happy about it.
“Barkeep, the Master will kill you for this.”
“Promises, promises. Get her out of here and my wife too.”
It was during this movement of my first wife and Sister Papoofnick that things went to hell.
Sister Papoofnick was being escorted by Tequila and Margareta and then her hand flashed inside the folds of her skirt and produced a dagger. She spun toward Tequila and drove the blade right into my second wife’s stomach. Blood splattered across them both. I pulled my BFG and without hesitation fired. Sister Papoofnick crumpled into a ball and fell to the floor. I raced to Tequila’s side.
Blood was everywhere. I tried to stop it with my hands. Margareta was calling for a medic and was in a state of shock. Tequila’s eyes fell shut. I screamed in rage. Then I remembered the gift I had been given. There were no words, I just willed it. I felt the power leave me.
The blood disappeared and Tequila’s eyes fluttered open.
“Hi there, I thought I had lost you.”
“Not, yet lover.”
She kissed me and I helped her back up. Sister Papoofnick was dead. My first wife looked at Tequila and I with a look of regret or loss. I couldn’t completely place it. Margareta led her outside. All things considered, things could be worse. Now at least I didn’t have the whole life and death thing hanging over my head. I held Tequila’s hand as we walked out. Colonel Gin came forward.
“Sir, the count is 210 vampires cured. We are debriefing them as we speak. That said we counted 400 coming into the house. that means 190 got away.”
“Where the hell did they go?”
“Out the back door.”
The voice came from behind me and as I turned I could see it was Shrike.
“You could have told us about that.”
“Didn’t know. I have been under cover as a serving girl not as a consort to Mr. Lies himself.”
“Boss what do I do with wife number one?”
“Take her to the pub Gin. Treat her well. I will have to deal with that situation soon”
Well, that ruined Halloween for Mr. Lies but it had not been as successful as I had hoped. There was a good chance that Mr. Lies knew about the cure now. Whether or not he took a sample to analyze was unknown. I didn’t think it would do him any good. The good news was 210 vampires were back to being human. That was a significant loss to Mr. Lies forces. Forces that he had been slowly building up over the last year. I set him back again and probably kicked him out-of-town. I would have the Shields start doing sweeps to make sure, but the town was probably ours completely once again. Other than that, there was always weird crap going on from time to time.
I stood on the mansion steps and held Tequila’s hand. The world felt good but there was still a few problems to take care of. I smiled. Time to go back to the pub and party. Just no Blood Moon Wine, I don’t think it likes my stomach.
Happy Halloween from all of us here at the Pub!
