I am seriously thinking of putting these notes on a separate page in the Ayn Jones Page just so I can always reference them quickly. Basically it is simply the desire to have all notes in one place so I can access them quickly.
Firstly, I have to note that the last episode made heavy use of the Starship Operators Manual Vol. 1. I will be using this manual for anything related to operating a starship so it is a great resource to answer questions for myself. I might still run into a few details but it will be helpful.
Secondly, I need to note the major interstellar governments which I mentioned.
- Dontar Republic – The Dontar Republic or ‘The Republic’ is a star spanning republic the occupies at the time of the story roughly a whole sector of space and it is capital is the Dontar system. That means it is four subsectors but four subsectors. A subsector is ten parsecs by eight parsecs. So the Republic occupies a section of the galaxy of roughly 40 by 32 parsecs. It is surrounded by other interstellar governments of various sizes but none is as large as it is. It is governed by a Senate where each member system gets representation by a single senator if the system contains at least 50,000 people. The Senate elects two consuls to handle the day-to-day operations. One is in charge of the military, the other in charge commerce. However, only the senate can declare war and ratify treaties with other governments. The consuls’ powers are additionally limited by the constitution of the republic to be enforcement of law only, not the creation of law so they can only act within the dictates of what laws and rules the senate imposes. Ayn Jones’ homeworld Regulus III was a colony world of the Republic and she is very devoted in her early life to the republic.
- The Holton Empire – The Empire of Holton is ruled by an emperor on its origin world of Holton. It was originally at one time a republic like the Dontar Republic but some years ago there was a coup that overthrew there Senate. It shares a border 32 parsecs long with the Dontar Republic and is roughly half the size of the Dontar Republic . They have had two wars in the past but there was no definitive result for either of them. How aggressive the Empire is seems to be dependent on who sits on the throne.
Finally I wanted to put out the UWP for a couple of mentioned planets and offer some explanation:
Pugar – X567774-3 Ag Ri – Pugar has one inhabited planet but its technology is in a Pre-Industrial state and the inhabitants are generally unaware that the Republic exists. The Republic usually waits until a society develops Jump drive on its own before contacting them so the scout service diplomatic corps has left Pugar alone. It is a rich agricultural world but is classified as off-limits and is regularly visited by the scouts and monitored by automatic systems. The main thing about the system is that it has three Gas Giants which the scout service uses for the refueling of starships. The Dontar Republic protects the system as it is within its borders.
Aurora – A-966A84-D Hi Xb A Aurora is the capital of the Aurora subsector of the Dontar Republic. It has a large and heavily populated main world but its technology level is Average Stellar so it is quite advanced and can pretty much meet most of its own needs. It has both a Republic Navy Base and a Republic Scout Base. It is also an X boat station so it is better connected with the capital than most systems. It has its own system navy and army as well. It is ruled by a bureaucracy that is extremely compliant Republic desires and is made up of various agencies in charge of different areas that hire people based on expertise in a field. It also contains the local branches of the Republic Naval Academy, Military Academy, Merchant Academy, several universities, Flight School and various medical schools. It is an open society despite or perhaps because of the bureaucracy.
Hopefully this will help me keep everything straight but I also know I am going to have to start making some star maps soon to keep track of the way things are laid out. Maybe during Christmas break.
