MegaTraveller’s character generation system was unique for the time in that you often could play a character who right out the gate had a lot of skills and experience. This was possible because your character would enter the game having already had a previous career that was previously generated. You would roll up your UPP then enter a service based on what the UPP and your homeworld said you could enter and were suited for. Each term in service was four years and during each term you could get promoted, learn skills and gain benefits. You could also die or be mustered out due to injury based on a survival roll. Re-entering for another term was not automatic either. You could be forced to leave before you wanted to and there was also the problem that once you passed 34 in age you would begin to feel the effects of aging. What this could mean is that you could enter the game as a 38 year old Navy space vet with lots of skills but he had lost a step as far as strength, agility or endurance. How long you stayed in your initial career was due to desire and luck.
There was also an optional and more advanced character generation system that instead of going every four years you could do the same type of thing but on a year by year basis. For the purposes of Ayn Jones, this is the method I have chosen to employ. It is only available for those that are going into the Space Navy, Military, Scout Service or Merchant Service. So Ayn desiring to be a Scout was arranged so I could use this advanced character generation system. The idea also is that this might generate some background stories for telling as each year can be recorded and told as they come up as she goes through this initial career.
Part of this advanced character generation system is that you can also start by going to College, Navy academy, Military academy, or Merchant school. You could also follow this up with Flight School (Navy Only) or Medical school (all services). Ayn chose the College option but did not enter OTC (Officer Training College) or NOTC (Navy OTC). She received the maximum education benefit which is 5 due to her intelligence but failed to graduate with honors. Yes, I am rolling these things randomly to add some flavor to the story and it might randomly create an adventure or two so I am doing some of this with dice in hand. In addition, I always thought it was lame to graduate from regular College without skill while all the other skills you could get education and skills so I allowed Ayn to major in something (Navigation) and get that skill for it at level one. Ayn then entered the Scout Service and the first year is getting the default skills for service which are Vacc Suit-0 and a level in Pilot. Ayn Jones’ character sheet looks like this now.
UPP: AACCDA Age: 23(18) Race: Human Sex: Female
Homeworld: Regulus III – UWP: C365361-A S Lo Ni Rs
Skills: Pilot-2, Navigation-1, Handgun-0, Computer-0, Grav Vehicle-0, Vacc Suit-0
Default Skills: Ship’s Boat-1, Sensor Ops-1
Character Note: Ayn Jones underwent a anagathics experiment from the time she was 18 to 19. He chronological age is thus one year behind her physical age. The experiment was a success and in addition to retarding her aging process to 10% normal (1 year for every ten) – she ages one year every time her chronological Age hits a year with a nine(9) on the end. It also added 2 points to her Strength, Dexterity and Endurance. Her original UPP was: 88AC8A. She has a degree in Stellar Navigation from Aurora University. Brownie points – 1
Some other notes that could be made. I fudged the four years she needed to be in college to three to get her more back on the four year track. Her new education level means she now can have a maximum of 25 skill levels. There is also the issue of default skills. Technically because of her advanced pilot skill, Ayn also possesses what is known as Ship’s Boat skill at one level less than her Pilot skill. This is noted on her character sheet as a default skill and does not count against her level limit. The other skill she has which is not mentioned is Sensor Ops-1 which is a default of the Navigation Skill. It does not get bigger or smaller no matter how much Navigation skill she possesses, but also long as she has Navigation-1 or better skill she has the ability to operate Sensors at a default level of one. The only way to improve beyond level one is to actually take sensor operations training to level two.
One other note could be made about something called brownie points. In the advanced character generation system the character could also gain and use brownie points. They can be earned by surviving special situations or graduating from schools. One is also given for surviving each four year term of service. Ayn has earned one for graduating college. She has not used it but it can be used to modify any die roll by one (or more than one if more than one brownie point is used). They cannot be kept past character generation so if there are any left, they are often used at mustering out to get better benefits.
Now the process will be to take each year in the scout service as it comes one by one and see if there is a story to be had. At the very least I should be able to write a post on each four year term of service as part of her background. I want to flesh out her background randomly so as to create an interesting character but I also know her personality so I will use brownie points based on that. Enjoy.
Blessings and Cheers!!!
