1 Corinthians 13:4-13:
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.
For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
The main thrust of this passage is not the gifts themselves but the fact that they are all given by the same Lord for the same purpose. As we continue to look at what makes a good church become a great one, we discover that there is one mission and purpose for which we all serve. That said things work much better when we find our place in God’s church that not only represents our gift but begin to understand that God’s gifts will most likely line up with our skills, follow the passions of our heart, and be driven by our call.
People most like know their skills but they are often are unsure of how they should be utilized in the context of church. Being good at anything can be helpful but it often takes a lot of thinking and prayer to figure out how to utilize it and how it can be most effective. That said, you can be good at something but if there is no passion for it then it will fall flat.
Passion is required to overlap with skill. You must not just be good at something but it must be something you love doing it or you will not be effective at it. People can tell when people are doing something as a job or as something they love to do in a second. effectiveness begins when skills are united with passion. The one thing that still is required though for things to be truly considered a gift – drive.
Drive is the product of calling. Call and drive take us through rough times. People who are driven and called will keep going despite adversity and will ignore the cares of this world to accomplish God’s purpose and be fruitful. It is when Skills, Passion and Drive all overlap that we find the sweet spot of being a gifted. We do what we do well with passion and call and that is an unstoppable combination.
In Hersey Congregational Church this means finding out what we are capable of doing because of our skills but focusing on the things that we are both passionate and called to do. This is one of the big keys of moving forward and doing the best for God’s church. It is a journey of discover that will lead to success.
