Acts 13:44-52:
The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord. But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us,
‘I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles,
That You may bring salvation to the end of the earth.’”When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region. But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district. But they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. And the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
Paul’s decision to move to the Gentles was significant. The first day Paul had been allowed to speak in the synagogue and had achieved good results among both Jews and god fearing Gentiles. The next day however he is actively opposed by the leadership mostly because of jealousy over that success. Paul for the first time establishes a pattern that you will see for most of his ministry: preach to the synagogue and when they throw you out, go to the Gentiles.
It must be understood that Jewish tradition would never even view a full proselytized Gentile as anything more that a sanctified dog. It would often take several generations to get to the point where the family would even be considered Jewish. Paul’s message cuts through all that and removed the Jewish leaders from control of who would be saved and placed it back into the hands of God. Paul and Barnabas will find themselves resisted even in their message to the Gentiles so they shake dust off their feet as Jesus had commanded and move on to the next town. This is also a pattern Paul uses which is to preach in as many places as possible going where people will listen.
Next: More Acceptance and Opposition
Not much has changed in almost 2,000 years, except for what the “gatekeepers” are called. Gentiles were “different”, so they weren’t welcome. How many churches would open their arms and hearts to a same-sex couple, or to a trans-gender person? One dear pastor-friend told me that he would be defrocked if his denomination found out that he has accepted an invitation to be the key-note speaker at a Christian Nudist Festival this summer, but he is going anyway.
Sometimes we have to quietly operate on the fringes of the established church to take the Good News of the Gospel to those who are “different”. We may be the only Good News bearers some people will ever come in contact with, because they aren’t welcome in the church.
God bless!
Steve
