The Book of Romans 13 does talk about submission to authority. It also talks about rulers being the servants to help us. The real problem in the united States is that our King/Queen is not a single person or small group. Rather, The People of the United States as a whole fill that role. If there is a problem, the buck really does not stop with the president, congress, the supreme court, or even the state governments. The big issue is The People and if there is a problem in our nation it is ultimately the People’s fault. The only changes that I can foresee that will genuinely help are changes that need to take place in The People. The counter to every problem I see is a change within the people. I outlined four problems in my last post on this subject so here is how I see this would work out for each one.
1. Stop accepting bribes from the steward known as government. This requires basically enough character to work on being self-reliant as a ruler. Much of legislation is designed to bribe us and we need to say simply and basically that we can take care of ourselves. The cage of reliance on the government needs to also be dismantled. It is about each citizen supporting themselves and their family as much as possible without government perks and entitlements.
2. A lot of laws simply need to be removed. A whole new discussion needs to take place with a new attitude. The desire to control others citizens by using the law needs to leave the character of the American people and a new attitude of allowing freedom and liberty needs to be discussed. This requires a change in character as well, allowing people to live as they see fit and not as we think they should live. The notion of being morally superior to others needs to be replaced with the simple moral understanding that while I may know what may be better as a way to live, I have no right to force it on others.
3. Realize that the two-party system is deliberately designed to keep us fighting about the small things which distracts of from the big things. Namely that the two parties agree far more than they disagree and both of them have staked the deck to make sure this never changes. I firmly believe the two-party system needs to be junked in some way.
4. Realizing that the democratic process has value. It is the one way that the People still exercise their power. Voting is you exercising your sovereignty as the ruler ‘who is God’s servant to help’ and neither the Steward of our power (Government) nor the Wielders of the Sword (Law Enforcement) can stop this. The cynicism about the process must stop with a desire to use the process to take back our power as The People.
All of this requires changes of mind and character that I can see our necessary. I can see what the solution must be but the step by step process still alludes me as far as how this could be accomplished. I know however that it needs to start with the individual changing their own character and mind to focus on being the rulers as The People, which God has called us to be. This country depends on us being The People who not only have backbone to stand up to those under us but also to respect and honor each other enough to change our overall character.
